During my time working on Gears 5 I had the honor of helping to bring back a much-requested MP map from Gears 2, which was the classic River. The art direction for this iteration of River was the scene of a classic battle between COG and Locust, and the team really worked to push that narrative throughout the map to help guide players around the symmetrical layout.
I was responsible for dressing this environment from blockout to shippable with assets, alongside fellow artists Joe Tyas and Julius Peters. My main focus was on the central bridge and river and the two side buildings, being the Corpser-infested cafe and the town hall building claimed by the COG. The riverbed itself was a muddy no-man's land full of the bodies of the dead factions.
